Chapter 6

CHAPTER 6- TEACHING WITH MULTIMEDIA AND HYPERMEDIA

Multimedia- combination of media, including graphics, sounds, photographs, text items, etc...
Hypermedia- Interactive media

TYPES OF HYPERMEDIA SYSTEMS
-Come in a variety of different software

CURRENT AND FUTURE IMPACT OF HYPERMEDIA ON EDUCATION
-Increased Motivation- help students who struggle to complete tasks get them done
-Flexible Learning Modes- Good for a student who is good at one thing, and bad at another
Development of creative and critical thinking skills- causes learner to always make decisions
-Improved Writing and Process Skills- help students generate new perspectives on things
-also permit learning of sophisticated evaluations

RESEARCH ON THE IMPACT OF MULTIMEDIA AND HYPERMEDIA SYSTEMS
-primary advantage is allowing rapid searches through lengthy or multiple information sources
-However, learner control is of more use to higher capable students
-Helps determine whether certain hypermedia features are effective in various learning situations

RESEARCH ON THE DESIGN AND USE OF MULTIMEDIA AND HYPERMEDIA SYSTEMS
-Instructional design- developers should analyze each element in a multimedia product
-Screen Design- well designed screens help the learner focus
-Interaction and FeedBack- tailor feedback to the response, and provide encouraging feedback
-Navigation- support with clearly defined procedures, clearly labeled back and forward buttons, and help segments
-Learner Control- provide older/ more experienced students with more control, and less experienced with less control
-Some others include color, graphics, animation, audio, and video
-INTERACTIVE DESIGN- discipline focused on creating pleasurable experiences that appeal and benefit the learner
-- This includes Utility, Usability, and aesthetics

COMMERCIAL HYPERMEDIA SOFTWARE PACKAGES
-Tutorials- give descriptions and explanations
-Drill and Practice- posed in audio or video
-Some others include simulation, instructional gaming, and problem solving

Reference Materials
-Encyclopedias- most major ones are no longer published in paperback
-Almanacs- Also shifting to e-sources
-Atlases- Google earth is a prime example on the new atlas
-newspapers and newsletters- most can now be searched on the internet these days
-Proceedings and other conference materials - these are now available

Evaluating Commercial Hypermedia Products
-Instructional planning and support- comes with an audience
-others include instructional design, content evaluation, interface design and navigation, and feedback and interactivity

INTEGRATING STRATEGIES FOR COMMERCIAL HYPERMEDIA PRODUCTS
-Presentation software
-Video Production and editing systems
-Hypermedia development software
-Web 2.0 authoring tools

MULTIMEDIA AND HYPERMEDIA AUTHORING RESOURCES
-Audio Resources- include audio from cd and other sounds
- Video ReSOURCES and photographs are both things that can be used and uploaded on.
-Also, this can be done with graphic images and texts

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR HYPERMEDIA DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT
-although hypermedia authoring can be accomplished with minimal computer system, more complex products require additional hardware and software capabilities.
- This includes computers with mouse, keyboard and monitor. Also includes digital camera, scanners, video digitizers, camcorder, and other video input
-Microphones- used to incorporate sound
-Audio Speakers- needed for good sound

HYPERMEDIA DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT PROCEDURES
- At the next level, authors must develop insights into the complexities of the various media and knowledge of visual and navigation design.
A number of strategies can be used
Review Existing products
-Perform research first- require location of materials
-Storyboard- help make good use of students
-develop individual frames and segments
-Add links and/ or scripts- this can be helpful in directing learners to where they need to go
-Test and revise the product- this allows the user to figure what they did, or did not do correctly

MULTIMEDIA AUTHORING TOOLS, TYPE 1: PRESENTATION SOFTWARE
- This software helps users create on-screen descriptions, demonstrations, and summaries of information.
-Electronic slide shows- sequences of frames shown in a linear way.

INTEGRATION STRATEGIES FOR PRESENTATION SOFTWARE
- Support for lecture or presentation of content
-Practice screens
-assessment screens
-Brief Tutorials, Book Reports and Student created presentations

MULTIMEDIA AUTHORING TOOLS, TYPE 2: VIDEO PRODUCTION AND EDITING SYSTEMS
- video editing software is to motion images what word processing is to text

INTEGRATION STRATEGIES FOR VIDEO PRODUCTION AND EDITING SYSTEMS
-use computer based video production and editing systems for variety of purposes, ranging from presentation the daily school
-demonstrations of produces , student created presentations, video lectures, video portfolios, video decision-making problem solving simulations
-documentation of school activities
-visual literacy instruction- now has established a significant role in media
-teaching video production and real time video communication

Multimedia Authoring Tools, Type: 3 Hypermedia
Development Software

Brief Tuttorials- step through a sequence of things
Student Created presentations- act as reproducing software
Others include interactive storybooks and student-designed websites and mini games
