TECHNOLOGY IN ENGLISH AND LANGUAGE ARTS INSTRUCTION

ISSUES AND PROBLEMS IN ENGLISH AND LANGUAGE ARTS INSTRUCTION
- teachers can often find problems implementing the basic skills into technology for the classroom. Moreover, teachers need to understand the importance of being able to do this.
-EXPANDING THE DEFINITION OF LITERACY
-  has changed alot through the history of the USA
- teachers need to recognize that traditionally appropriate definitions of literacy are no longer true often
- therefore it is important for use to recognize NEW LITERACY which is simply a way to teach this information with a better understanding what literacy and technology are

EXPLORING NEW INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES
- direct connection for the need for new literacy and need for new instructional practices.
-students also need to have knowledge of the software, and how to use this software
- also, it is important for teachers to comprehend language in the context of visuals because this is now becoming a leader in teaching these days
-these images are often in technology-based formats ranging from digital pictures to streaming videos
- in recent days, a growing body of literature illustrates ways to implement new practices.

MAKING DECISIONS ABOUT KEYBOARDING INSTRUCTION
-most common way to write using computer requires input through a regular QWERTY keyboard
- some believe this will make students better at typing and using the computer
- others, however, believe that this will not make students better, and possibly make students worse off then they were prior to using this
- both arguments are legitimate

CREATING SOCIAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
-new forms of literacy are much more contingent on social interactions with others than traditional literacy are.
-teaching and learning are no longer confined to a traditional classroom context.

WORKING WITH DIVERSE LEARNERS
- schools have more of these learners than ever before
- it allows the opportunity to interact and develop the needed skills.

MOTIVATING STUDENTS
- the more a student reads, the better developed their language and writing skills become
-teachers need to find more ways to motivate students
- it can also be a challenge for teachers to have teachers express themselves in their writing.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION STRATEGIES FOR ENGLISH AND LANGUAGE ARTS INSTRUCTION
- perhaps the most creative ways are found in this field
- now believed that English language and digital technology are now inseparable
-LANGUAGE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
- through technology use in English and language arts clearly emphasizes the need for student to read more often in order to develop their skills
- there is a time and place for all of this
-Teaching Decoding Skills- teaching students to sound out words
-Developing other reading skills- a variety of other technology resoucres are available
--Software based and online systems- reccomnend several soft-ware based and online systems for providing instructions in phonics, decoding, comprehension and vocb. skills.
--Reference resources- electronic dictionaries and thesauruses provide support to students developing vocb. and spelling skills
--Creating Everyday teacher activities- teachers can develop "everyday" applications using things such as microsoft office

LITERACY DEVELOPMENT
-networked literacy project- use internet to engage students in reading
-Activities with interactive storybooks and talking books- placed in electronic format or DVD
-Digital storytelling- good readers create "a mental movie of images evoked by the story
-Connections to online reading materials to engage students
- writing blogs- just like in this class, this can be a great tool for creating notes and having people see them
-motivating writing and video projects- script writing and other ways to motivate students
- threaded discussions at a distance- teachers find that having students participate in discussion boards instigates both reading and writing.
